While there is a full moon and it happens when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, our planet's only natural satellite is at its closest point to our planet. This is known as a supermoon. It is known as the perigee. Supermoons are more prominent and brilliant than typical full moons. In the night sky, they can look up to 16 percent brighter.

The moon that is at its furthest point, or apogee, is referred to as a micromoon.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?

The name of the August supermoon comes from a huge sturgeon fish that North American Algonquin tribes were once able to capture with considerably more ease.

Following the Buck Moon in July, the Strawberry Moon in June, and the Flower Moon (which also included a total lunar eclipse) in May, the Sturgeon Moon will be the fourth supermoon in a row. According to the Farmer's Almanac, the full moon in August will be the last supermoon of the calendar year.

Why the strange moniker? According to NASA, Native American names for full moons first appeared in the Maine Farmer's Almanac in the 1930s and are still used often today. The Algonquin tribes of what is now eastern North America gave the Sturgeon Moon its name because it was easier to catch giant sturgeon fish in the Great Lakes at this time of year.

Every month or so, the moon, Earth, and sun line up on an invisible 180-degree line to form the full moon. The moon's orbit differs from Earth's orbit by roughly 5 degrees, thus it normally rises or falls slightly above or below Earth's shadow, allowing the sun's rays to shine on the side facing Earth.

On Saturday, September 10, the following full moon peaks. The Harvest Moon is the common name for the moon.
